For some reason, a recurring issue has been surfacing on several blogs I read daily. This issue is commonly placed under the idea of "God's Sovereignty". The sovereignty of God is wrapped up in 2 main words in these debates, 'foreknowledge' and 'omniscience'. Omniscience is possessing infinite awareness, understanding, and insight, as well as universal or complete knowledge. Omniscience is generally attributed to God, stating He exists out of "time", and therefore knows all that is going to happen in the future. Foreknowledge is generally attributed to God from certain scriptures and additionally reinforces that God knows all that is going to happen. Couple 'foreknowledge' and 'omniscience' with the word predestination, and all kinds of stuff starts to fly theologically.
The 2 main camps in this historically fall under Calvinism and Arminianism. Very generally speaking, Calvinists believe everything is predetermined, even down to those who would end up eternally in hell while Arminians believe man's free will/choice plays a bigger role. The theological positions are more complex than that obviously, but I don't wish to use this post to spell those out...want to know more, see Wikipedia. :)
I basically want to examine what my mind has been wrapping around lately. If I believe in a God who does not know the future, is that a God worth believing in? However, if I believe in a God who before the end of time chose certain members of His creation to suffer eternally in hell with no say in the matter, is that God worth believing in? Somewhere there is a middle road...
Let's examine this in light of the current political system of the United States. Did America 'choose' Obama, or did God ordain him to be president? Now before you get all bent out of shape over that statement, do a little research on the Pharoah of Exodus, or King Cyrus in the Old Testament. God said He "raised up" Pharoah for specific purposes. God said He would use King Cyrus to accomplish His plans for Israel/Judah by "stirring up" King Cyrus. God has shown in the past He would use those who His followers didn't think should be in power for His good pleasure. Where do you fall on this? IF God in His foreknowledge decreed Obama to be in power, we as God's followers have no complaint in regards to Obama's political decisions. God foresaw it, allowed it, and set it in motion. IF God did NOT know Obama would 'win', then the blame, so to speak, lay with Christians who may have put into power a most ungodly acting individual. If that's the case, those believers who are up in arms over the current administration have no bone to pick w/ the administration, but their neighbors who voted for him. HOWEVER, Paul would have us believe according to Ephesians 6, our battle is NOT against flesh and blood, but against spiritual principalities and powers, leading us to think someone other than human hands were responsible in the voting booths.
Ultimately I don't believe God is swayed by what 'we' think about Him. I believe He loves relationship with us, and He seeks to know us as His creation very intimately. However, if we come to a decision in our head that He falls short in some attribute or if we give Him greater measure in an attribute than He even gives Himself, I don't believe He gets into a tizzy. I suspect He just mutters something like, "Will they ever get it right?" and moves on about His day. No...this discussion is for us, not for Him. I am far away from being in a conclusive position about this personally...but I sure do enjoy floating it around in my head. It drives me to study more and more scripture (note I said scripture not tradition) and that is never a bad thing...
